Renewable Engergy Tech
The following information was recently reported by the Washington Post (in the form of a quiz)
- April 2023 marked a milestone that might have seemed unimaginable 30 years ago: For the first time, the United States produced more electricity from wind than coal for an entire month. It would be nearly another year before it happened again — but then it was for two consecutive months.
- Iowa is the U.S. state with the highest share of electricity generated by wind power. What percentage was wind of all the electricity generated in the state in 2024? 60%
- The latest figures from 2024 showed that the U.S. and China both generate about 10 percent of their energy from wind. Denmark is the world leader, with close to 60 percent of its energy supply generated by its turbines.
- Despite China having 10 of the world’s top 15 biggest wind turbine companies in 2024, not a single turbine installed in the U.S. that year came from a Chinese supplier. Over the past few years, the U.S. has been using fewer Chinese-made parts, too. In 2017, more than 30 percent of imported wind turbine parts came from China. Today it’s closer to 3 percent.
- Around 147,000 people in the U.S. work in the coal industry. How many work in the wind sector? 130,000.
